Three Cities In Italy, Three Paintings

I spent two months living in Italy and nearly every day painting Plein Air studies, absorbing the culture and the architectural beauty. It was once I got back to the studio when I was able to paint some larger works that would truly represent my experiences there.

I would like to share with you three paintings from three different cities that inspired me.

Rome:  We spent a good amount of our time in this city, and it is definitely one of my favorites. I feel that it is a perfect combination of the hustle-bustle big city life and that old-world intimate charm. With its deep history, endless architectural beauty, and rich culture, it will forever be on my list of great cities. Our apartment was in the Trastevere neighborhood, located on the east side of the Tiber River. Just a minute walk to Piazza di Santa Maria we would find one of the oldest running fountains in the city. There, each evening, the performers would come out and entertain the tourists and locals alike. This painting is of one of the fire dancers that would put on quite a show once the sun set beneath the city horizon. She would dance with strength and power while maintaining the precision and elegance of a classically-trained dancer, as she controls her element of choice. This painting is my representation of that mystery, strength and beauty.

Naples: Although we did not spend a lot of time in the city, it was still an amazing place. On the narrow streets of Naples is where life is lived. It is where adults converse, children play, merchants sell their goods, and buyers buy. This painting is of one of the many fruit stands that you would find along the sides of the streets. We would purchase our fruits and vegetables from this particular stand, so this painting has a personal element to me and my girlfriend because we know what that fruit tastes like.

Venice: This city is a magical as you may think. When the busses and the yellow cab are replaced by the vaporetto and boat taxis taking you down the canals and inner waterways of a city that appears to be floating on the sea, it is no doubt a magical experience.

This Painting is from Giudecca looking over the waterway as the sunset lights up the Venetian sky.
